Group J Definitions
The definitions apply to 4x4 vehicles, whether designed principally for the transportation of passengers, commercial use or dual purpose. Such vehicles should not weigh more than 3.0 metric tonnes and be registered as jeeps. Saloon cars and cars derived from commercial vehicles are prohibited. All vehicles must be insured and eligible for public road use. All vehicles must comply with FIA safety regulations.
- Standard vehicles - petrol or diesel engined vehicles mass produced by a motor manufacturer generally available for normal retail sales via a network of dealers. All modifications not authorised below are expressly prohibited:
- Those modifications necessary to comply with the FIA safety regulations are authorised.
- Additional gauges for monitoring engine performance may be fitted.
- Front seats are free. Rear seats may be removed but all interior trim must be retained as fitted.
- Springs and shock absorbers are free except original operating principle, standard location and number must be retained.
- Air filter elements are free and may be discarded.
- Standard transmission ratios must be retained. Optional extras are prohibited.
- Locking and limited slip differentials or traction control devices are free, but the standard axle casings must be retained in their original positions.
- Brake friction materials are free.
- An additional spare wheel may be carried securely insided or outside the vehicle.
- Auxiliary lights may be fitted in pairs.
- Underbody protection may be added.
- Series production cross country cars (Group T1) - vehicles modified strictly according to Article 284 of the FIA Yearbook. Valid homologation papers must be carried at all times.
- Improved cross country cars (Group T2) - vehicles derived from cars homologated in Group T1. These may be modified strictly according to Article 285 of the FIA Yearbook. Valid homologation papers must be carried at all times.
- All other 4x4 vehicles which do not have a valid homologation in Group A or Group N
